At Toyota, “The Thinking Way” refers to the OPDCA Cycle (Observe, Plan, Do, Check & Act).  In education, “The Thinking Way” is exemplary teaching as teachers Observe their students to determine where they are with respect to a knowledge, skill, behaviour or value expectation.  They then Plan their instruction in order to teach a new skill or master a current skill while still observing.  Next, teachers Do the instruction and Check for understanding or mastery and change their instruction accordingly through Action.  The OPDCA cycle then repeats itself continuously until all students meet the targets set by the expectations.  “The Thinking Way” can also be used in a school, department and system setting to support the gemba (student learning or mastery).
